Identify Your Beast

 We don't promote our books here, although all of us RRH bloggers are writers.

So, this isn't a promo. It's just some fun that our own, Tara Tyler, came up with to promote her middle grade book, Broken Branch Falls.

Summer 2017, the sequel, starring Dwayne Johnson and Kevin Hart, is coming to one seriously fun movie. 

Starring Robin Williams, this story centers on a 12-year-old boy, Alan, who starts playing a mysterious game. The game causes a shift in reality that unleashes all sorts of action, adventure, and total mayhem. Alan and his friends must finish the game in order to set their world back to rights.  

So, before watching the sequel*, grab the original. 

Or check your local library! Did you know your local library often has movies you can check out just like books? 

*A little movie trivia for you...Jumanji 2017 was originally set to be a sequel, but the writers quickly rewrote the script to be a continuation to the original story rather than a remake. So glad Hollywood got smart. There is no need to tamper with perfection and Robin Williams in this film is perfect.

Fitbit Challenge

I've posted about my Fitbit before. It's the activity tracker you wear on your wrist. It's a neat little item. I have the cheap one-- all it tracks is distance walked. You can get high-end models that show your heart rate, time, and maybe you can even find a few that wash the dishes for you...just kidding....they'll have robots for that. Be patient, they're coming. 

One of the great things about the Fitbit is that you can join the Fitbit community and link your progress with your friends...mine are linked with my email contacts and Facebook friends. 

Sure, it can be embarrassing. Note how I am way under my friend's step counts? That's a reminder that those skinny bitches cheat fine ladies work harder than I do. Sure, the competitive soul in me wants to win at all costs, maybe attach my band to the ceiling fan or wrap it around my dog's paw and set a hamster loose in the house.... 

But I fight that dark side. The truth is, this sort of feedback is black and white proof  that I am chunky because of my own habits, not because God cursed me with a slow metabolism. I'm a writer and half of everything I do is done sitting on my derriere. But if I want to stay healthy and be able to climb steps better than a 90-year-old with asthma, I have to move more.

It's also a reminder to me that I need to worry less about the numbers on the scale going down, and worry more about these numbers going up. I need to challenge myself.

Hazy Headlights? Quick Fix

Last week, my husband and I picked up a "new to us" car for our sons at college.

Prior to this picture, "Great Deal, 30 day warranty" was written on the windows in white car-dealer paint. We weren't overly excited about driving down the road with the sale details written across the windows, so we were going to wipe it off with the numerous napkins we had left over from McDonald's.

The car dealer came out with a quicker, much simpler solution-- one that honestly, had I not seen it with my own eyes, I'd have not believed it.

Bug spray!!

He sprayed the paint with Cutter Bug spray (not sure if it has to be Cutter or if any bug spray will do) and wiped it off. Cleaned it off in a jif-- without leaving any residue!

Then he showed us how the same bug spray clears away foggy headlight film. There was an older model car on the lot with hazy headlights. He sprayed on some Cutter, then wiped it off. Clean and shiny!

I do love new, easy tricks!

*I do not know what the long term effects would be to finishes and paint, so I would use caution or tape off the painted area. I mean, it is bug spray...

She likes to... MOVE IT!

Exercise. We all hear about how we should do more of it.

But what if you hate exercising?

Then I suggest that you take a serious look at what you're doing. If you don't like that particular thing, do something else.

I used to have problems with my feet (plantar fasciitis). It got so bad I'd cry if I couldn't find a parking place close to the grocery store door, and I had to ride one of those grocery store go-carts.

Do you have any idea how dangerous people with regular shopping carts are?

I found riding a stationary bike and deep-water aerobics a good option. Here's an example of the latter.

Three foot surgeries later, and I got a treadmill. More on that later.

If you try things and don't like them. Try something else. And don't be afraid of being too old!

I started studying karate the month I turned 50. I joined because my boys were studying it, and I wanted to do that with them.

They quit. I stayed and got my Black Belt.

Then I started writing and got busier than ever (I work full time). I found myself having to choose between writing and exercising.

This is solution.

Yes, that is the kid from the Harvest Moon game peeking over the side there.
I had hubby find me a board that could put across the treadmill handles. It holds my laptop. That 30-40 minutes has never flown by so fast! I also have a weight bench and watch movies while I lift weights.

And having my kids paint the walls with their favorite video game characters didn't hurt either.

So what's my point in all this? 


Find something you like to do and do it

Make it fun. 

Make it work.

Keeping the weight off

I’m going to do a brave thing with this post. I’m going to talk about my weight.

I’ve been metabolically challenged since I was about ten. Over the years, I’ve probably done about 80% of all the eating programs out there, with varying degrees of success—usually slow with such plans as Weight Watchers. 

I’ve been quite successful with some programs—How to Lower Your Fat Thermostat (Neuropsychology of Weight Control), South Beach, The Fast Metabolism Diet, and most recently Take Shape for Life.

The odds are not in our favor as far as keeping weight off. I've lost enough weight in big batches to build a large adult male. If I added up all my smaller stints, I'll bet it's equivalent to a small woman.

What makes it come back?

It can be temptations (we eat what we eat because we like the food), or lack of support at home (sabotage by loved ones). Sometimes our bodies even fight us. For example, have you read that New York Times article about the weight regain by The Biggest Loser contestants?

It’s not just discouraging, it’s plain depressing. I have wondered many time why I keep trying. I’m active. I work out. I try to eat right. Why can't I be smaller?

So, I decided to take the plunge and try Take Shape for Life. The thing that encourages me that this time could be THE time is that I have a health coach. She and her husband (a fellow writer), together, lost about 200 pounds on this program, and they’re keeping it off.

The key is the support. I’ve never had much with other programs I’ve tried.

*takes a deep breath*

Last April 20th, I weighed 241.8 pounds (I’m 5’9”). *cringes* And that's not the most I've ever weighed--that was 249 pounds (without being pregnant). 

As of last Monday, I weighed 191.6. 

**begins rant** Can you believe my stupid body wouldn’t give up that lousy .2 pounds so I could say I’d lost 50!!??! **endrant**

And believe it or not, I was sucking that gut in on the left.
I wish the one on the right showed my waist (which is smaller than my abdomen--much smaller).
Do I worry that people who know me say are thinking things like:
There goes Donna again. How long will she keep it off this time?
 Heck, I have my own little demon sitting on my shoulder asking me this very question. So, do I fret?

Oh, yeah.

Am I hopeful?

Heck yes! My freaking slip fell off walking to my office last week!

I want good health. I want to be here for my grandkids for a long time. 

Dang it, I’ve got a lot more books to write.

Easy Peasy Beef Borscht

Just about to cook!
It's September! That means it's basically Fall, right? So maybe it's still in the 90s out there... the leaves are starting to turn here and there, so that means soup season to me no matter what the temperature is. Soups, chili, heavy dark breads... I'm getting fatter just thinking about it.

So what I'm going to share today is our quick recipe for a pot of Borscht (no, really, that wasn't a sneeze) that will feed a family of 4. Borscht is one of my absolute favorite cold weather soups because it is hearty, uber-healthy, and the beets give it a richness of flavor that is totally incomparable to anything else. Just a hint of sweet, but totally savory. It's the only thing keeping this from being a conventional beef stew, but the difference is amazing. We like to make this recipe ahead and can several pints/quarts for the winter. There's never a bad time to eat it!

Here's what you'll need:

3/4 to 1 lbs of medium sized red beets
1 quarts beef broth (I usually add an extra bouillon cube)
1/2  lbs. beef (we prefer sirloin roast sliced super thin)
1 red onions, chopped into 1-2" chunks
1/2 lb. cabbage, chopped into bite-size chunks
1 Bunch radishes, roughly peeled and sliced into thin disks
1/3 lb. fingerling potatoes, peeled and chunked
1/3 lb. carrots chopped into roughly 1/2" chunks
2 cups red wine
SEASONINGS: I never give exact measurements on these because everyone has a different preference. I tend to go on the heavy side. I suggest starting with 1 TSP each and then modifying from there to your preference. Here's what you'll need generally, but feel free to play with it til your heart's content!

  1. Roast and peel the beets. If you have never done this before, here's a good quick method. I always use paper towel to rub the skins off, though. It saves my fingers from turning fuschia! Once peeled, cut into quarters and set aside.
  2. In a pot, bring about 1/2" of broth to a simmer and sear the thinly sliced beef chunks on each side for about 45 seconds. Drain, and set aside.
  3. Using the same pot, add all of the other ingredients and simmer on low-medium heat for 35 - 45 minutes. Veggies should be soft, but not falling apart. Over simmering will reduce your potatoes to mush.
  4. Add the beef, then simmer for another 45 minutes. Meat should be soft, but thoroughly cooked.
After that, you're ready to serve! Be sure to have a bowl of sour cream on hand, because there's no better way to eat borscht than with a big dollop of sour cream.

Cat Pee Patrol

If any of you follow me on Facebook or Instagram, you know I love the crap out of my cat, Princess Lily Leaf Butt. She's the last of the 4 cats I had when I met my husband (we lost 3 to cancer over the course of 4 years), and she is spoiled beyond reasoning. She dines on venison and braised bunny because of her protein sensitivity (thank god for Hollywood Feed!), and she gets treats as soon as we get out of bed, and as soon as we get home from work. She even has her own little screened-in patio with flowers and a litter box that gets cleaned regularly by her human.

And yet, in that amazing ability all felines share to display positively unrestrained disdain, she still punishes us by going to the bathroom on anything soft we leave out for her.

She's even the reason we can no longer leave a bathmat out because - and trust me on this - there's nothing worse than stepping out of a shower onto a mat that steams and goes mush.

Peeing outside of the box is one of the major reasons people list as returning otherwise perfectly adoptable cats to shelters, too often leading to would-be companion animals eventually being lost to kill shelters. Granted, it takes a special person to handle delving into a cat's twisted psyche to diagnose the root of the problem, but since we're already used to her particular brand of adorable evil we decided to follow a few steps to suss out the problem.

  1. First and foremost, make sure the box is clean. Cats are fastidious little devils and they like their throne to reflect the grandeur they feel they deserve. Some cats are less forgiving than others and may need a box cleaned thoroughly every day, not just scooped. 
  2. If your box is clean and your cat is peeing somewhere it's not supposed to, take it to the vet as soon as possible. Urinary Tract Infections are extremely common and are frequent causes of potty issues in pets. Ear infections, pests, worms, and other ailments that cause your cat discomfort and may not be easy to see can also be the culprit. 
  3. If your cat has a clean bill of health, make sure the litter box is in a "safe" location. Even if it's perfectly clean, your cat may not feel comfortable if the box is near a source of loud or sudden noises, or in a high-traffic area. It may even be in view of a window where other animals pass by, making your cat feel threatened during its daily constitutional. Try moving the box to quieter locations or even adding a second box somewhere else in the house.

  4. Is your cat peeing on YOUR clothing/bedding? People tend to believe that all cat urination outside the box is territorial (esp when it belongs to them), but more often than not it's because they associate that smell with you and it makes them feel safe. This goes back to #3. If they're seeking a safe place to go to the bathroom, then you might need to move their box.
  5. If your cat pees on your jerk boyfriends shoes - you know, the one who doesn't like cats - well, then, your choices are clear. Dump the guy. Cats are smart.
  6. Wherever your cat has peed (or if another pet has ever peed in a location), be sure to thoroughly clean the area. If it's on carpet, use white vinegar and let it soak all the way through to the pad, then blot the area after at least 10 minutes. I usually repeat this at least twice to make sure the smell is totally gone. If a cat smells pee anywhere in the house, it will seek it out as a place in the future.  That's why we have one room in the house where the cat can only hang out under supervision. And why I moved a heavy tool box into a weird spot in the floor...

Finally - remember that cats don't understand discipline or shaming the way a dog does. If you yell at a cat or try to punish it, you'll only scare the animal and probably drive it to more inappropriate peeing out of fear. #3 has ended up being the brunt of the problem in our house. She went from having a back yard full of prime poop spots to having only a single box. Hence the little "gifts" she started leaving throughout the house.

If your cat has you at your wits end on pee patrol, try going through these steps before doing anything drastic and you might end up with the relationship that every Fancy Feast commercial promises us cat ladies.

Bowling anyone?

This third blog post is supposed to be about something fun or crafty. I’m afraid my only craft is cooking. Ask me anything you like about that and I mostly will have an answer.

I have never been an exercise freak or a sports buff although these days we go 5 pin bowling twice a week and love it. Canada is the only country where 5 pin bowling is played, it was invented by a Canadian just over 100 years ago although I understand his original version was a lot harder to play. Glad it has been simplified. My scores are bad enough as it is.

Being a senior, I also go to the exercise classes which are held in our building 3 times a week. I only go twice because one class clashes with bowling – can’t miss that. Not that I am any chicken, but it is incredible to see 90-year-olds doing exercises or bowling. The oldest bowler I ever met was 97. However, that was her last year. When she died she was bowling twice a week, drove her own car, played ping pong and did line dancing. I should be so lucky. One morning she didn’t wake up. Best way to go.

One thing we do like to do is have friends over for dinner when we (mostly I) cook up a storm. I used to do a lot more like printing fancy menus for my guests.  Haven’t done that for a while now. I used to belong to an online cookery group too, where we swapped recipes. I was very lucky to be able to meet many of them at a lunch in England when we went back for a visit.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading every word of Jo's posts and getting to know her better! Just hearing how pleasant life is for her gives me hope. And I agree, cooking and baking isn't what it used to be. But I know many who love the craft. Thanks for sharing your wisdom, Jo and keep bowling!

Two Homey Favourites!

Today, I am giving you two recipes. I do this on my blog Jo on Food, Life and a Scent of Chocolate, all the time – I love to eat and I love to cook although at my advanced time of life it ain’t so easy any more.

Recently Liz mentioned camping dishes. I have only ever camped in a trailer never in a tent. I lived on a boat with my parents for many years so we didn’t go camping, but Matt (hubby) and I went camping in our trailer for several years, once we emigrated to Canada. However, this dish I invented many years ago mainly for my first husband who really liked canned corned beef. I don’t have any measurements sorry. For me it’s just one of those “cook by feel” recipes.

Jo's Corned Beef Mac & Cheese

First of all, you sauté some onions in butter, then add some flour and cook until it becomes a thick roux. You then remove the pan from the heat and gradually stir in some milk. You then put the pan back on the heat and stir continuously until the sauce thickens. When it is thicker you add grated cheddar cheese, salt and pepper.

Meanwhile, you cook some macaroni and in a large baking dish you put slices of canned corned beef, tomatoes, seasoned, top with macaroni and then pour your cheese and onion sauce over the top. It can be served as is or baked in the oven for a while to get a crisp cheesy top and to warm the corned beef and tomatoes.

This is a very easy recipe to make. The quantities are decided by the amount of people you are making it for. Matt, my husband, took a bunch of juvenile prisoners on a camping trip in the UK once and he cooked this for them on their campsite, although they had to help.

I have never made mac and cheese from a packet and when we came to North America I was horrified to see how many people did so. One friend showed me how she made a cheese sauce with cornstarch which meant she didn’t have to cook the flour in butter at the beginning to make a roux – but you loose the flavour if you do it that way. The white sauce basis should have a buttery taste before you add the cheese which makes it so much richer.

Good sauces are a fundamental basis for good cooking. I find it so sad that many people just can’t be bothered any more. France used to be the home of great cookery when I was young but I am told that today French women don’t bother to learn how to cook any more. I have a nasty feeling that, in the future, people will be eating food produced by machines and probably will neither know nor care how it should taste.

If you are the type who likes your recipes spelled out for you, this is a dish we have been cooking for many years and is a great favourite of ours.

Chicken Breasts with Lemon and Capers

1/4 cup Flour
1/4 tsp Black Pepper
1/2 tsp Paprika
2 Skinned, boned chicken breasts about 1 lb, halved and pounded to ¼  in thickness
5 tsp canola oil
1/4 cup chicken broth
2 Tbs lemon juice
2 Tbs Capers, drained

1. FLATTEN the chicken first by placing it between two sheets of Saran wrap and beating.

2. Combine the flour, pepper and paprika on a plate. Press the chicken breasts into the mixture, coating them evenly all over and shaking off any excess.

3. In a heavy 10 in skillet, heat the canola oil over mod high heat for 1 mins. Add the breasts and cook about 3 mins on each side, do not overcook. Transfer the breast to a heated platter.

4. Add the chicken broth to the skillet scraping up any browned bits on the bottom. Stir in the lemon juice and capers and heat through. Pour the sauce over the breasts and serve.

Pink Stuff

We are very excited to have Jo Wake, one of our faithful friends at the House guest, join us to post this week! She has some sage advice and tidbits to share!

It was so kind of the Really Real Housewives to ask me to do some guest posts this week. I can claim Liz as a friend, but although I follow this blog, I don’t really know any of the other housewives. However, I have been a housewife for a lot longer than most of them so I have been learning to do things the easiest way for a few years now.

One Sunday afternoon I was sitting thinking I didn’t know what advice I could offer you when I looked at my carpet and thought I needed to do something about the spots on it. Lo and behold, I thought of something you might appreciate.

Many years ago, whilst living in the States, I bought some Pink Stuff – it’s actual name is Quick ‘n Brite – and I have been using it forever. It is the best thing I have ever come across for removing the spots and stains which occur through every day life. No, I am not being paid to recommend it, but I think it is wonderful stuff. Recently I visited our local Costco and found they were selling a similar product which the guy selling it actually called the Pink Stuff, although oddly enough it’s white. Something about the pink being from strawberries and people being allergic. I don’t think I believe that. I had loaned Quick ‘n Brite to the local bowling alley and they were impressed with it so the owner’s wife picked some up. I believe you can use it in a carpet cleaning machine these days. But for me, it will always be something I use as a spot cleaner. You can mix it with water or for really bad stains, use it undiluted.

Except for wine spills. Maybe you don’t drink wine, but I do and I found this tip a long time ago. If you spill any red wine on your carpet, don’t touch it; cover it with a thick layer of salt. Leave it for, maybe, 24 hours and then just vacuum it. Hey presto, no wine stain. I tried mopping it up with paper towel first. Big mistake. The salt does a wonderful job of absorbing the wine. Of course the moral of that is drink it don’t drop it.

That same Sunday I had to peel some garlic and I thought you might be interested to know that you can keep garlic forever in a Mason Jar once you have peeled it. I put a piece of paper towel in the jar to absorb any moisture.

Peeling the cloves is a pain and I used to be able to buy peeled garlic in the store but haven’t been able to do so for a while. I first started doing this when I bought huge jars of peeled garlic at Sam’s Club. Way more than you would have thought just two of us could cope with. Amazingly it keeps a very long time. I just wish I could still buy it peeled because peeling it myself is not my favourite job. I find a medium size Mason Jar holds three good sized bulbs of peeled garlic.

A DIY Labor Day You Can't Miss

For Labor Day, Americans honor the labor movement and contributions that hard workers have made to the strength, well-being, and prosperity of our country.

So... what does that mean for us women?
Ladies, it's a time to celebrate and embrace all our hard work. Can I get an AMEN! Let's revamp, and make Labor Day all about fun! Here are a few easy, quick, and cheap ways to brighten up any basic BBQ or dinner on Labor Day.

Nice, right? If you don't have Coca-Cola bottles laying around, mason jars are a quick flip for these. Buy some vinyl table cloths at the Dollar store, and these little sparkler decors. Add a snack mix inside, and it's a perfect centerpiece...that's edible!

Look, you don't even need to PAINT the cans. Simply put construction paper wrapped around them with the ribbon. All, again, Dollar store. But this is a super cute way to separate party utensils!
Did you know mason jars can be so fun??? You could do waters with lemon slices in them, pink lemonade, ice tea for the tea drinkers, ice water, ice water with cucumber, strawberries in lemonade. Obviously this was a freaking brilliant idea! You don't even need the metal tub it's in. Use a cooler filled with ice. And if you really want it not to look like a cooler, then take one of those vinyl table cloths, red/white/blue cuts of each or of one color, and tape it around. Be creative! Heck, you can even use a inflatable kiddie pool!
This one I picked because of the cupcakes. Everything here is a great idea. The banner can be made from construction paper of blue or red, and use a white chalk to make stars. The Jones soda is clever. BUT the stars on sticks??? Oh, come on. That was impressive. See how it just makes everything POP! Easy to do. You can buy a bag of  craft pip cleaner and cut out stars from red/white/blue construction paper. Use markers for fun creative designs. This is a fantastic way to add PIZZAZZ!
THREE fruits, wooden skewers, and BAM! American Flag. Usually you see people make the cakes. But why? Make it simple! I'm definitely going to do this one!

Hope everyone was able to get their creative Labor Day juices going. I hope to do all of these suggestions, and beef up our annual BBQ for Labor Day. Maybe it seems silly, even if it's just for your family, but these are the memories your family will remember!
